The film begins with Dr. Dolittle's children, Mimi (Kyla Pratt), Maya (Kyla Pratt), and Charlie (Brandon Baker), who are struggling to cope with the loss of their mother. Dr. Dolittle is a widower and has been neglecting his children, focusing instead on his animal friends. However, when a intelligent and sassy parrot named Polynesia (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) helps him understand the needs of his children, Dr. Dolittle begins to reconnect with his family.
