Paan Singh Tomar was born in 1938 in the village of Piprai, Madhya Pradesh. He was a talented athlete and joined the Indian Army, where he was trained in sports. In 1960, he won a gold medal in the 10,000 meters event at the National Championships. His performance earned him a place in the Indian Olympic team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Although he did not win a medal in the Olympics, his achievement inspired many Indians.
