The movie begins with Elliot Besser, a true-crime writer, moving his wife, Lorraine (Juliette Lewis), and their two sons, Carter and Lucas, into a new home in the suburbs. Elliot is excited to start working on his next book, but his enthusiasm is short-lived. He discovers a box in the attic containing disturbing home movies that seem to show a family being murdered.
