Biya's entry into politics was facilitated by his education and connections. He joined the Cameroonian government in the 1960s, serving as a civil servant and later as Minister of State and Prime Minister under President Ahmadou Ahidjo. When Ahidjo resigned in 1982, Biya succeeded him as President, marking the beginning of his long and eventful presidency.
