The movie revolves around Kathiresan, a happy-go-lucky young man who lives with his grandmother in a small village in Tamil Nadu. One day, he meets Lakshmi, a beautiful and educated woman who has come to their village as a guest teacher. Kathiresan falls deeply in love with Lakshmi, but she is already engaged to a Delhi-based businessman, Sunder (played by Mahesh Bhatt).
